Text messages are the new communication standard. They’re fast, easy, and convenient. And they’re also not private. Your text messages could be read by anyone with a phone who has access to your phone’s contents. Sometimes it feels like there is no way to keep messages private, but there is! This post will help you understand the ins and outs of the world of secure text apps.
What makes a secure text app secure?
There are a few different factors that make a secure text app secure. These include: encryption, the company’s reputation, and who owns the servers. First, let’s talk about encryption. Encryption is what keeps your messages safe from prying eyes. With encryption enabled you can be sure that only you and your contact will be able to read any messages sent between each other. Every message is encrypted with a randomly generated key before it even leaves your phone or tablet. This means that neither of you have to worry about someone intercepting your message in transit by hacking into the carrier’s network (it also means that carriers can’t snoop on you). The next factor is the company behind the app. When it comes to privacy, reputation is everything. Wickr’s parent company, The Wickr Foundation, has been around since 2013 and has received nothing but glowing reviews from the press (like this one) as well as their users.
Wickr offers a number of features that help make sure your messages stay private:
End-to-end Encryption – All messages sent with Wickr are encrypted before they leave your device or get stored on our servers. This means only you and the recipient can read them — not us nor any hackers or spies who intercept them along the way. Even if we wanted to, there is no way for us to decrypt your messages because we don’t have access to your encryption keys. Privacy by Design – We designed Wickr to minimize the amount of data we store on our servers. Your messages are encrypted before they leave your device and only stored in an unencrypted form long enough for us to deliver them. As soon as they’re delivered, the messages are deleted from our servers.
Privacy Enforcement – The moment you use Wickr, all your previous messages are erased from our servers and no one else’s — not even ours! If you want to save any message, you must do so by taking a screenshot or using another app to take a picture of it. This is how we enforce privacy policies – if someone tells us that they have used Wickr and would like their old messages removed from our servers, we will delete them.
We don’t store your messages on our servers; they are stored in the “Secure Cloud” of a third party provider. We don’t even have access to these messages, nor can we read them. The only way someone could get access to them is by hacking into this Secure Cloud and getting past the encryption that is used to protect them (which would be nearly impossible).
Wickr has been designed from the ground up with privacy as a core value, and we will continue to innovate around it. Privacy is not for everyone, but if you want it – have it! Wickr Pro is now a better value than ever. It includes all the great features of Wickr Me, including the ability to send self-destructing messages and pictures, as well as meet new people through private chat rooms, with additional features like:
Message expiration – set an expiration time for your message (or anything else) so that it disappears from your recipient’s device after a certain amount of time. Perfect for sending temporary passwords or other critical, ephemeral information. A must-have feature for any business!
Boosted delivery – increase the chances that your message will get delivered by buying a boost within seconds of sending. Your recipients will receive a notification when you boost delivery and can choose to view the boosted message first in their inbox.
Boosted delivery is available on the following plans:
Unlimited – $0.99/month or $9.99/year Unlimited Plus – $1.49/month or $14.99/year Business – $2.49/month or $24.99/year Enterprise – Contact us for pricing
